Online Therapy in Florida for Trauma, Relationships & Feeling Stuck

Therapy can help you understand why you struggle— but you still may find yourself caught in the same reactions and relationship patterns.

I provide online therapy for adults in Florida who are dealing with complex trauma, chronic shame, emotional overwhelm, difficult relationship patterns, conflicting parts of themselves, and the exhaustion that can come from trying to hold everything together.

Many of the people I work with have already done therapy, read about trauma, or spent years trying to understand themselves. They don't necessarily need more insight into why they struggle.

I offer therapy that actually helps you feel different, and change the ways you react to yourself or others.

Reaching out doesn't commit you to therapy. It's simply a chance to talk about what's bringing you in and see whether working together feels like a good fit.

Online Therapy for Florida Residents

I provide online therapy by secure video to adults located in Florida.

In case you’re new to the idea of online therapy, you don’t need to meet with a therapist in person, and many peer-reviewed studies show that online therapy for trauma and other issues is just as effective as in-person work. If you're in Florida and we're a good fit, we can work together entirely online.

I’m based in San Diego and authorized to provide online psychotherapy to clients located in Florida.

My Florida LCSW license is SW14603. I have worked with clients in Florida for years, and have colleagues in psychiatry located in Florida to support our work as needed.

You’ve Done the Work. Why Do You Still Feel Stuck?

Let’s start here: you understand where your reactions come from.

And you may know that something happening in the present reminds your nervous system of something that happened in the past. You know your attachment patterns, and you know when your inner critic has taken over. You may even be able to name the different parts of yourself that show up under stress.

But you still struggle with

  • Becoming overwhelmed when someone pulls away.

  • Shutting down when someone gets too close.

  • Feeling like a small conflict is more hurtful than others see it.

One part of you wants connection while another wants to disappear.

You know you're safe, but your body doesn't seem to believe you and you’re waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Maybe you've become so good at functioning that other people don't realize how exhausted and burned out you actually are.

Insight is important. But insight isn't always enough to change an emotional or bodily response.

That's often where our work begins.

An Experienced Therapist for Complex Work

I'm Richard Brouillette, LCSW.

I've worked with adults experiencing complex trauma and longstanding emotional and relationship difficulties for more than 20 years.

My work is particularly suited to people who are comfortable with thinking about what makes them tick and often already know quite a bit about themselves—but have discovered that understanding the problem hasn't necessarily changed it.

My training includes advanced work in complex trauma and dissociation, IFS/parts work, mentalization-based therapy, schema therapy, EMDR, cognitive therapy, clinical hypnosis, and mindfulness/self-compassion approaches.

Just as important to me is creating a therapeutic relationship that feels calm, real, curious, and steady. I won't rush you into material simply because a particular therapy model says it's time to go there.

What I Help With

Complex Trauma & CPTSD

When the past is understood intellectually but still shows up as shame, hypervigilance, punitive self-criticism, emotional flooding, numbness, disconnection, or a persistent sense that something is wrong with you.

Attachment & Relationship Difficulties

If closeness feels both deeply wanted and strangely threatening—or you find yourself repeating relationship patterns you understand but can't seem to change, therapy can help.

Therapy can help you become curious about what happens inside you around closeness, conflict, rejection, trust, dependence, and vulnerability rather than simply trying to stop yourself from reacting.

Parts Work / IFS

When different parts of you seem to want completely different things—one part wants closeness while another pulls away, one wants change while another resists it, or an inner critic seems determined to keep you from feeling okay about yourself, therapy can help.

Rather than trying to eliminate these parts, we can begin to understand what they're trying to accomplish and help them find less painful ways of protecting you.

Burnout & Chronic Overwhelm

When you've been functioning under pressure for so long that rest doesn't seem restorative anymore, therapy can help.

You may still be getting things done while feeling increasingly exhausted, detached, irritable, numb, or unable to keep pushing yourself the way you used to.

What Therapy With Me Is Like

You don't have to arrive knowing what kind of therapy you need.

I work interactively, drawing from Internal Family Systems (IFS), ego state approaches, schema therapy, psychodynamic/psychoanalytic, mentalization-based therapy, and EMDR when appropriate.

But therapy isn't a collection of techniques I apply to you.

I pay attention to what happens between us, what happens in your inner world, and what your system seems ready—or not ready—to approach. Sometimes the work involves understanding a reaction. Sometimes it means noticing what's happening in your body. Sometimes we're listening to a part of you that has spent years trying to keep something painful from happening again.

The aim isn't to push past your defenses. It's to understand why they're there. I always tell my clients, you are the expert on you.

In trauma therapy, sometimes we have to go slow to go fast.

Online Therapy Can Still Be Relational Therapy

Therapy taking place through a screen doesn't mean the relationship has to feel distant.

Studies show that the one factor in psychotherapy that predicts good outcomes is the relationship between therapist and client. That’s the foundation for everything else.

Much of my work depends on careful attention and deep listening—to shifts in emotion, moments when you pull away or become overwhelmed, changes in how you experience what’s happening, and what happens when difficult things enter the room between us.

Online therapy can still give us space to slow those moments down and become curious about them together.

And for some people, being in their own environment makes it easier to notice what's happening internally without the additional activation of traveling to an unfamiliar office.

Why Work with a Therapist Outside Florida?

Why am I looking at a therapist in San Diego when I live in Florida?

Finding the right therapist isn't always about finding the person whose office is closest to you.

Online therapy gives you the ability to look for a therapist whose experience and way of working fit the particular difficulties you're trying to address—even when that therapist isn't located in your city. As long as the therapist is licensed in your state, and we agree that online therapy will work for you, no problem.

I’m based in San Diego and authorized to provide online psychotherapy to adults located in Florida. As long as you’re located in Florida at the time of our sessions and we’re able to work together under the applicable licensing requirements, distance doesn’t have to determine whom you choose as a therapist.

Is This Kind of Therapy Right for You?

We might be a good fit if:

  • You've already done therapy but feel there is something deeper that hasn't shifted.

  • You understand your trauma or relationship patterns but still become caught in them.

  • You experience yourself as having different “parts” or sides that don't always agree.

  • You want help with relationships without having everything reduced to communication skills. Relationships are also about core patterns.

  • You're tired of fighting your reactions and want to understand what they're protecting.

  • You want a therapist who can tolerate emotional complexity without rushing to fix it.

  • You're looking for therapy that combines insight with attention to emotion, relationships, and the body.

  • You’d like to build a strong, trusting rapport with your therapist.
